A rating system known as the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is used to assess your eligibility for NHS treatment and NHS treatment is available for grade 4 and grade 5 cases. Grade 3 cases are usually judged on an individual basis. Treatment may also be made available if the appearance of a person’s teeth, jaw or face is of concern.
- Grades 1 and 2 are too mild and no significant health benefit is to be gained with braces.
- Grade 3 is borderline and a child will only qualify if the appearance of the teeth is poor. The aesthetic component is determined by comparing the child teeth to a series of 10 photos.
- Grades 4 and 5 are severe and easily qualify for NHS funding.
- Grade 6 and above will qualify.
We do not accept self referrals for NHS Orthodontic treatment. You must be referred by your own dentist.
